Distributors should be taught that their primary function is to gather customers. Their second priority is to build a downline and to teach about the first priority.  The charge to become an independent distributor is taxable when the lump-sum charge includes catalogs, printed information, sales aids, samples, or products. If your client separated the charge for tangible personal property, the separately stated charge for becoming a distributor would not be taxable.

Products are important, but the dynamic that makes Multilevel Marketing work is the concept that in Network Marketing almost anyone has the ability to open a business and create wealth for themselves with a very small investment. So the most successful Network Marketers are organization builders and not sales people.

Pyramid schemes are illegal. There are many legitimate multilevel marketing companies that do operate successfully. Pyramid schemes tend to look like legitimate multilevel business opportunities at first but as you get to know a little more information, you realize that they are not legitimate businesses but that they are schemes. Pyramid schemes make all of their profit on signing up new recruits, therefore, the cost to join is usually high.

So again, be careful when looking for a true legitimate multilevel marketing company and home business… choose one that has a good long track record.  If you do the research in finding a good company the rewards can be absolutely amazing if, and I highly stress "if", you put in the effort.  And it’s always a good thing knowing you’ll be getting paid on the effort that you put into something unlike a traditional job.
